Charlotte McGowan

Age: 14

Sex: female

Date: 30 Nov 1944

Place: Ackers Hall Avenue, East Prescot Road, Liverpool

Ann Edith Hankin and Charlotte McGowan were knocked down by an unknown car.

A bus driver said that he had been driving a Ribble motor-bus along East Prescot Road when two or three American motor-lorries overtook him at Eaton Road, going along at about 40mph.

He said that when he next arrived at Ackers Hall Avenue he saw the two girls lying near the edge of the foot walk and stopped his bus. He said that they were both badly injured. They were both dead when they were taken to the hospital.

He said that there were no other vehicles in sight and that none had passed him except for the army lorries.

The coroner said that they both died from fractured skulls but that there was no evidence to show how they came by their injuries and an open verdict was returned.

Ann Hankin had lived at 36 Saxby Road in Liverpool and was the daughter of a general labourer whilst Charlotte McGowan had lived at 7 Saxby Road and was the daughter of a ship's cook.
