Robert Burgess died from a gunshot wound.
A group of soldiers were in a square around dusk assembling for night operations when a rifle shot rang out from a group of soldiers near Robert Burgess. The rifle shot killed Robert Burgess and also hit another soldier in the arm.
A discharged cartridge was found in the square the following morning and all the men were examined but nobody came forward to admit the discharge of the shot.
The inquest heard that the men had been firing their rifles during the day and about 30 of them were uncleaned.
The Coroner said that the man that had fired the shot must have known it and that it was regretted that he had not owned up.
An open verdict was returned.
