Roy Michael Kennah

Age: 24

Sex: male

Date: 1 Nov 1985

Place: Uxbridge Road, Hayes

Roy Michael Kennah died when a car crashed and landed on top of his car in November 1985.

The other car had been driven by a woman that had been driving to Sunday School at the time. However, it was said to have been driving at quite a considerable speed at the time, although there was not enough evidence to make charges.

The woman, who had lived in Willow Tree Close, Hayes, had been driving her Escort XR3i in November 1985 along the Uxbridge Road when it was flung into the air after hitting another car.

Roy Kennah, who had been driving the other way in a sports car died instantly from multiple injuries when the woman's car landed on top of his car.

At the inquest in April 1986, the Coroner returned an open verdict, and explained that no charges were being brought by the police over Roy Kennah's death.

He said:

The absence of evidence is one of my greatest difficulties.

He noted that witnesses had said that the woman had been going at 'quite a considerable speed', but that they had also heard other evidence that tyre marks at the scene showed was not  right.

The court heard that the woman's Escort XR3i had hit the rear of a Datsun driven by a man that had lived in Maple Road, Hayes. He said that he had U-turn through the gap in the centre island, stating:

The road was clear. The other car was too far away from me.

However, the woman's 15-year-old son, who had been in the car with her on his way to Sunday School, said that as his mother was about to overtake the Datsun, that it swung across the road into the fast lane.

He said:

We went left to try and miss it, but we hit it.

Another witness, a man from Ashford, said that he had been in a car behind and said that the woman's car passed him at quite a considerable speed and that further long it hit a marooned car.

He said:

I heard a loud bang, and saw glass shooting up into the air.

He said that the Escort XR3i was then put off its course, mounted the centre reservation and on to a sports car coming the other way.

Another witness said that she saw the silver Escort XR3i 'somersaulting' across the divided carriageway.

She said:

There was glass and bits flying all over the place. It all happened like one of those things you see in the cinema. The other car going very fast, too fast.

Roy Kennah had lived in Northolt.
