Elizabeth Jayne Stone

Age: 79

Sex: female

Date: 11 Jun 2021

Place: Wonastow Road, Monmouth

Elizabeth Jayne Stone died after she was hit by a bicycle, however the cyclist was only convicted of causing bodily harm by wanton or furious driving.

He had hit her on 7 June 2021 whilst cycling round a corner at the junction of Wonastow Road and Somerset Road, but cycled off. Elizabeth Stone died four days later on 11 June 2021.

Elizabeth Stone had been out with a friend earlier in the evening for a meal and to go to the cinema and they had been walking back together along Wonastow Road at about 9.30pm when she was hit by the cyclist.

At the trial, the prosecution said that Elizabeth Stone had been hit violently by the impact, stating:

It lifted her in the air and off her feet. When she hit the ground her friend described her head making a cracking sound when it hit the pavement. The man cycled away and did not stop. Even though Jane's friend pleaded with him to stop, saying 'please I'm on own, come back'.

The man that knocked her down later came forward ten days after the incident. However, he claimed that he had stopped to help Elizabeth Stone, however, the incident was caught on CCTV, in which he was seen to cycle off without stopping.

A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service later said:

The way in which he rode his bike around the corner was completely irresponsible. His disregard for the safety of others using the pavement proved to be disastrous and is a stark reminder that pedal cycles can be dangerous to other road users when ridden so recklessly.
