Garrick Bates was found dead at a house in Sand Street, Stalybridge on Friday 17 January 2020.
A man was charged with his murder, but the Crown Prosecution Service later dropped the charge and he was tried for assault only.
Two other men were also arrested on suspicion of murder at the time but released.
It is not known why the charges were dropped.
Garrick Bates had been an army veteran, having served 23 years and rising to the rank of Master Armoury Sergeant.
