It was heard that Jane Campbell had been drinking heavily for some time and that since the previous Saturday that she had been drinking to excess.
On the Tuesday night she went to bed, accompanied by her mother, and on the early Wednesday her mother awoke to find that Jane Campbell's hands were very cold, although she was still breathing. Her mother said that she tried to warm her hands and afterwards fell asleep and that when she later awoke, Jane Campbell was dead.
Jane Campbell's mother said that the man that was arrested had visited Jane Campbell at their house on the Saturday and that after he left that she saw blood on the floor and noticed blood oozing from Jane Campbell's left ear and from her nose.
