The body of a newly-born male child was found in Cemetery Passage, South Grove in circumstances which it was said suggested foul play.
It was found wrapped up in newspaper by a policeman.
The skull had a T-shaped fracture that the doctor said had been caused during life and probably with a blunt instrument.
The jury returned an open verdict.
South Grove in Stepney is now called Southern Grove. Its not clear where Cemetery Passage was but it was probably connected with the City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery.
