Winifred Mabel Likeman died from an illegal operation.

A woman was tried for her manslaughter but convicted of the lesser charge of performing an illegal operation.

When the judge sentenced the woman he said, 'You untrained and unskilled people perform these operations on misguided women who want to get rid of their trouble, with results which are in nearly every case disastrous. You either kill them or you frequently do untold injury to their health. I hope that people who carry on this business will get to know what happens to people who do it'.

It is not clear why she was not convicted of manslaughter.
