Trevor Brindle was murdered in his flat on Danbrook Road, Steeatham.
He was found with massive head injuries beside a bed in his ground floor flat on 30 November 1985.
His flat mate's lover was tried for his murder but acquitted.
Trevor Brindle's flat mate said that the man had been in the flat when Trevor Brindle had come home but the man denied that saying that he had seen her earlier in the evening but was not in the flat at the time of the murder.
It was initially reported that the police thought that he had been beaten to death with an iron pole after he returned home to discover a burglar.
Trevor Brindle had been out earlier on the Friday night to the Cinderella Rockerfella's disco in Purley and it was thought that he had been attacked when he returned in the early hours of the Saturday. He had been hit from behind with a 3ft iron bar used as a lever on his hydraulic jack.
The police later revealed that the killer had spent about four hours sponging his bloodstained clothes before leaving the flat. The police added that they thought that someone might have spotted the killer leaving the flat early the same morning.
The police said:
Shortly before his murder he had split up with his wife, leaving her and their two young sons, and had been staying at the woman's flat in Danbrook Road.
