A female baby was found dead in the Leeds-Liverpool canal near Millers Bridge in Bootle on 27 May 1996.
The body was badly decomposed. It was found by a group of children playing near the canal on the Bank Holiday Monday who thought it was a doll. It was found near to Millers Bridge and Douglas Place.
Two post mortem examinations were carried out. The first was unable to establish a cause of death. However, the results of the second post mortem are unknown. However, a detective said:
It was thought to have been in the water for around two months.
The child was thought to have been no more than two days old when she died. However, it was thought possible that the child could have been still-born.
