Leslie Bate was beaten to death at his cottage at Tregilder's Farm on 12 or 13 April 2002.
He was found in a pool of blood near the back door with multiple injuries including fractured ribs. It was thought that his head had been repeatedly smashed against a washing machine.
He was last seen alive in a pub in Chapel Amble two days before where he was seen to have a large sum of money.
He had lived alone at the farm since his wife died in 2000.
His inquest heard that he often carried large amounts of money with him from rent from his properties and farm and at the time had a cheque for £11,000. However, after his murder, his brown leather wallet was never found.
