Elizabeth Anne Morris

Elizabeth Anne Morris died from carbon monoxide poisoning. She was found dead in bed in a gas-filled room at her home in Coleshill Road with a note indicating suicide.

An open verdict was returned at her inquest.

Her husband denied having caused her death after it was heard that his daughter told the Coroner, 'I accuse my father of murdering my mother. He said he would'. The daughter had lived in Warwick Road, Cliftonville.

It was also heard that Elizabeth Morris's son had also made allegations that his father had killed her to the police, but he later withdrew them. A detective inspector said that Elizabeth Morris's son had made allegations against his father three times, but each time contradicted them.

Elizabeth Morris's husband said, 'We were happily married. Why my family has this stigma against me I don't know'. He said that Elizabeth Morris had tried 17 times before to take her own life and had been prevented 16 times. He said, 'I was unfortunate this time'.

Elizabeth Morris's son added that he knew of six times that Elizabeth Morris had tried to take her own life previously, either by gas or by taking tablets. The son said, 'I believe that my mother was under the influence of a drug and that the gas had been turned on'.

When the Coroner detailed the circumstances of Elizabeth Morris's death, he said that she had died from coal-gas poisoning and that there were traces of a barbituric drug in her body.

A police detective said that he had been unable to get any definite evidence that any of the accusations could be substantiated or that a charge could be made against any person.
