Jason Clear went missing in Chichester on the evening of Wednesday 11 May 1988 and was later found drowned in the sea.
An extensive search was made for him around Chichester and Sussex and it was reported on 13 May 1988 that his father thought that he had been abducted.
A huge search was carried out involving police frogmen, dog teams, a helicopter and numerous volunteers.
However, Jason Clear was found in the sea on Monday 16 May 1988 after it was trawled up by the crew of the fishing boat Persevere close to the entrance of Chichester Harbour.
He had been out with his family and friends to Itchenor, described as a tiny yachting village on the edge of Chichester harbour, where they had gone out in a boat. However, when they got back, they had had an argument because Jason Clear had wanted to stay in the boat.
It was said that he then went to a public toilet adjoining the harbour master's office and was last seen walking up a nearby path.
He and his family had lived in Gilmore Road in Chichester.
The police said that foul play was not suspected. His post mortem showed that he died from drowning.
