Hugh Townsley White was found unconscious on the Great North Road between Allerton Park and Arkendale, about three miles south of Boroughbridge. He was taken to hospital but died on the way.
Hugh White, who lived at Nither Obney Farm in Bankforth, Perth, and his brother had been working on the Woodhead tunnel on the Sheffield to Manchester main line and had been hitch-hiking back home.
Early on 1 September 1950 his brother stopped a lorry and told the driver that his brother was unconscious. They then took him to the hospital, but he died on the way.
It was said that foul play could not be ruled out but nothing more is known.
