The body of a newly-born child was found in a bonnet box in a train from Glasgow to Euston, London.
The cardboard bonnet box was discovered on the rack of a third-class carriage of a train from Glasgow that had reached Euston at 6.30am on Saturday 18 November 1905. It was not opened immediately but taken to the lost property office where it was opened on the Wednesday and the body found.
It had been wrapped up in brown paper that bore the name of 'Recce' or 'Rees', Richmond Cottage, Camplin Street, and also the word, 'Scotland' on it.
There was also an ordinary passenger label attached to the box with the legend, 'Mrs Green, passenger to London'.
The police divisional surgeon who carried out the autopsy said that the child’s death was due to asphyxia and added that there must have been neglect at birth.
The police said that they communicated with the police in Glasgow who informed them that 'Camplin Street, Glasgow' was unknown.
The jury returned an open verdict.
