The body of a newly-born baby girl was found on the bank of the River Wear on Tuesday 12 April 1949.
It was found by a 14-year-old girl who called the police. When the police arrived, they found the body of the child on the riverbank at a point about 100 yards east of the Wearmouth Colliery railway line.
The pathologist said that he had arrived at the conclusion that the child had breathed at birth.
An open verdict was returned.
