Age: 0
Sex: male
Date: 19 Aug 1948
Place: Stroud Canal, Fromehall, Stroud
The body of a baby was found in the Stroud Canal at Fromehall by two boys who were out fishing.
The boys, aged 9 and 12, reported finding the body of the child to the police at 8.30pm on 19 August 1948.
It was thought that the body was that of a female child and that it had been in the water for not less than four or five weeks and probably three months or more. However, the inquest concluded that there was no evidence to show whether the child had had a separate existance, its cause of death, or its sex.
The police said that they were unable to establish the identity of the mother or determine how the body had come to be in the water. They said that their enquiries had taken them as far as London and Northumberland.
