Michael Grey was assaulted in the street on 11 November 2005 and died from the injuries in hospital ten days later.
He was attacked between the Plaza Tavern pub and the post office near the top of Ellesmere Road in Benwell. He was last seen in CCTV footage on West Road shortly before he was attacked. It was thought that he might have been followed from the Plaza Tavern where some people had just stolen a handbag.
He was a carer and was on his way to see an elderly person in his care.
It was also thought that he might have come across a burglary in progress.
His wallet was stolen.
He had suffered brain injuries in the attack having been punched to the ground. His skull was fractured and he underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain but never regained consciousness.
When he died his mother and brother were at his bedside.
The police later arrested and charged four people for theft and handling of property offences related to the theft of the handbag from the pub which was thought to have been connected to his murder and said that they were not looking for anyone else. However, there are no known charges, trials or convictions for Michael Grey's murder.
Michael Grey had lived in Arthur's Hill in the West End, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
