Jimmy Millen was shot by two men on a motorbike in Tile Barn Road, Hastings whilst he was in the street working on a car.
He was shot four times in the back at close range but managed to crawl to Carpenter Drive where he was found and taken to Conquest Hospital in an ambulance where he later died.
A witness said that the man on the motorbike that had fire the shot had been wearing black and the police later said that both men on the bike had been wearing black motorcycle leathers and helmets with blacked-out visors. After the shooting, the motorbike was said to have driven off in the direction of the Castleham industrial estate.
His murder was thought to have been linked to the murder of Jason Martin-Smith 28 who was abducted in August 2001. Jason Martin-Smith's body has never been found but a man was convicted for his murder in 2015 and sentenced to 29 years. It was thought that Jason Martin-Smith had been taken to a lock-up where he was dismembered in relation to a £200,000 drugs debt.
The police said that it was during the investigation into Jimmy Millen's murder that details of Jason Martin-Smith's murder came to light.
A man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder Jimmy Millen in February 2015, but no trial results are known.
Jimmy Millen was a boxer and a doorman. His family said that they thought that his murderers lived locally and added that she didn't think that the police had looked deeply into his case because he had had a criminal record.
It was also thought that Jimmy Millen had known James Ashley who was shot dead by the police at his house in Hastings in 1998.
Jimmy Millen had lived in Taylors Close in Hastings at the time, not far from Tile Barn Road.
He had three children.
