Egan Bernard Murphy was found in the road and died later in hospital.
He was found lying unconscious in South Road in Southall on Saturday 29 March 1941 at about 11.15pm and taken to the Hillingdon County Hospital where he died fourteen hours later.
His post-mortem stated that he had a fracture to the base of his skull, which was noted as being thinner than normal. The pathologist said that there were no marks of external injury and said that he must have fallen on the back of his head.
A policeman that saw him in the road said that he had been lying with his feet on the pavement.
The coroner said that there was insufficient evidence to show how his injury had been caused and an open verdict was returned.
Egan Murphy had been a civil servant and had lived at 41 Cornwall Avenue in Southall.
