Ashton died whilst wrestling with a 44 year-old-man.
The other man, a carter, was tried for Ashton's manslaughter at the Manchester Assizes on 17 February 1920 but was acquitted after no evidence was offered.
It was heard that Ashton and the carter had been wrestling and something happened during the course of the wrestling, but that it was not possible to state whether Ashton's death was the result of anything caused during the wrestling or from infirmity.
