The body of a newly-born male child was found on a footpath between Preston Grange Farm, Preston and Marden Farm, Whitley Bay.
It was found by two boys that had been out with their Alsatian dog looking for rats. They said that their dog began to sniff around at a grass mound in which there was a hole with a big stone in front of it. They said that they thought their dog had found some rats and so rolled the stone away from the hole and said that to their surprise they found the body of the child in the hole.
The body was nude and was perfectly dry and it was thought that it had been there for about two or three days.
A policeman that went along said that the spot where the body was found was in the Tynemouth borough. It was then taken back to the police station where it was examined by a police surgeon.
The child was fully developed.
The doctor said that death was due to inattention at birth and that there were no marks of violence on its body.
