James Rankin was found dead in the refrigerating room of the steamer Port Sydney at Cardiff.
He was found dead with a fractured skull.
James Rankin was a ship's engineer and had lived in Alexandra Parade in Glasgow.
He had been a crewmember on board the steamer Trougate at Cardiff and had left the ship saying that he was going to post a letter.
He was found dead two days later in the refrigerating room of a different ship, the steamer Port Sydney with a fractured skull.
It was heard that the Trougate had been moved and that the Port Sydney had been berthed in her place, and it was suggested that he might have entered the ship on his return and mistaken the door for the refrigeration room on the Port Sydney for the door to his cabin on the Trougate and stepped in to his death.
An open verdict was returned.
