Date: 7 Jul 1935
Place: Great Western Canal, Tiverton
The body of a newly-born male child was found in the Great Western Canal on 7 July 1935.
The child had weighed 9.5lbs.
The inquest stated that its eyeballs were protruding, and the right side of its head was flattened, suggesting that it had been lying on a hard surface.
It was noted that due to the absence of any signs of drowning, that it was reasonable to assume that death had taken place before immersion in the canal. The doctor said that marks on its throat seemed to indicate that its wind-pipe had been pressed between a forefinger and thumb and that its cause of death was strangulation.
An open verdict was returned.
