Walter Carlile

Age: 28

Sex: male

Date: 24 Feb 1934

Place: Princes Dock, Hull Docks, Hull

Walter Carlile was found dead in Hull Dock.

He was found in Prince's Dock, at the rear of Ferens Art Gallery.

He was the son of the licensee of the Foresters' Arms in Beverley and was last seen by a chum in Victoria Square in Hull on the night of 6 January 1934 saying that he was going away for three years and that he would either return a thousand-pound man or a tramp. The friend had been drinking with him between 7.15pm and 10.15pm during which they had five or six glasses of beer. He said that Walter Carlile told him that he was either going to catch a train to Leeds or Newcastle and that when he went off he went in the direction of Waterworks Street.

His father said that he last saw him when he went off to see a man about getting a hare. He said that there was no trouble at home.

However, his body was found in Hull Dock on 24 February 1934, having been in the water for several weeks.

When his body was searched by a policeman he found a bullet which was said to have fitted a humane killer.

The doctor that examined his body said that his lower femur was fractured.

An open verdict was returned.
