John Reed disappeared around 11 December 1911.
His coat was later found near an old air shaft at the Old Park.
The shaft was not safe to descend owing to dangerous gases but 200-candle power lamps were used to look down but only stones could be seen.
He had lived in Lawley Street in Dudley.
