William Gourdie was found drowned at Dunstan Coal Staiths.
He was an able seaman from the SS Horley Grange of London who had been reported as missing on 2 August 1922.
He had been acting as watchman whilst the vessel was at Dunstan when he vanished.
He had scratches on his face which was very swollen but no marks of injury on his body.
He was identified by documents discovered in his clothing.
