John McCarthy was found dead in the River Tyne.
He had been out drinking on 17 February 1917 with another man and had had four pints.
After they left to return to their lodgings and John McCarthy went off towards a crane and shortly after a splash was heard.
The other man said that he then went to the water’s edge but it was dark and he couldn't see anything.
John McCarthy's body was later found in the River Tyne near Skinnerburn on 5 April 1917.
An open verdict was returned.
He had been a sea-going fireman.
