A 7-month-old child was killed at a house in Benfoot, Overtown.

The child's mother was tried for his murder but a verdict of not proven was returned.

She was said to have assaulted her son by beating him, placing him in a bowl of water and suffocating him.

The mother pleaded not guilty and it was intimated that there was a special defence of temporary insanity.
