The body of an infant boy was found in a reservoir near Back Lane, Higher Blackley.
The child's body was found on 16 March 1927 and a Coroner's verdict of wilful murder against some person or person’s unknown was returned.
Sometime later the police were said to have been searching for a woman who had written a dozen letters to a Manchester man in which she charged herself with drowning a four-month-old child in the reservoir. However, the letters were not dated or signed and no address was given.
The child was nourished and clean and had been dressed in a white cotton nightgown with the bottom part cut off, a white woollen vest, a white knitted woollen coat and a woollen cap.
