Place: Chestnut Avenue, Victoria Road, Headingley

The body of a newly-born child was found in an ashpit.

A woman found the body wrapped up in paper in the ashpit attached to her house. She said that the shape of the parcel made her suspicious and so she called the police.

A surgeon said that it was a fully developed child and had breath, stating that one lung was fully inflated, and the other had a quantity of air.

He said that he could not definitely say that the child had been smothered but said that from the way the umbilical cord had been cut that he didn't think there had been any intention to tie it.

An open verdict was returned.
