The body of a newly-born female child was found on Roker Beach on 24 April 1924.
It was found by a miner who had lived in Hamilton Street, Monkwearmouth whilst he was looking for coal on the beach. After finding the body he informed the police.
The child's body had been lying within a yard and a half of the water, apparently left by the tide, between Holey Rock and Roker Pier.
The child had been charred, had a fractured elbow and a scalp wound.
The post-mortem stated that the cause of death was from burning. It was stated that the child had been put on a fire or hot ashes, whilst still alive, immediately after being born. There were also four punctured wounds on the chest and its head had also been injured.
A verdict of wilful murder against some person unknown was returned.
