The body of a newly-born female child was found in a parcel in a ditch near the Whitmore Dairy in Staplegrove.
It was found by a postman on his rounds. At the inquest he said that he had not seen the parcel, which was made up in brown paper, the previous day adding that if it had had been there he would have noticed it because it was in plain view from the road.
A policeman said that the paper was torn and the right side of the body was exposed and the right arm and shoulder were missing.
A doctor said that the child had had a separate existence and that death had occurred at least three weeks earlier from an unknown cause.
