The body of a new-born child was found at Marton on 3 July 1917 wrapped up in brown paper.
The parcel was first discovered by an 11 year old boy who lived at Asylum Cottages who had been out playing with some friends under a hedge wrapped up in brown paper. However, at the time he thought that it belonged to someone and so didn't interfere with it.
Two days later on 5 July 1917 another boy who also lived at Asylum Cottages also noticed the parcel but this time saw feet protruding from it and went to get a policeman who removed it.
A doctor examined the child and said that he was of the opinion that it had been born alive but there was no evidence to show how it had died.
