Evelyn Gainsford went missing.
She was the wife of a Captain in the Royal Artillery and had been staying with him at Gara Rock in Salcombe, Devon.
On the Wednesday evening she had said that she had wanted to go to Sandy Cove at the bottom of the cliff for the purpose of getting onto a rock that was otherwise surrounded by water at high tide. However, she never returned.
It was thought that getting on and off the rock was easy but to get on the rock with the surf running was extremely hazardous and it was thought that she might have drowned. However, her body was never found.
