Christopher Odam was found strangled in a field off of the Balcombe Road, short distance outside Horley.
He was a showman and a roundabout proprietor.
It was thought that the motive for his murder was robbery.
He had a handkerchief tied tightly around his neck and one side of his face was badly battered.
Christopher Odam had sold a couple of horses on the Wednesday evening for £7. 5s. and it was thought that the killer or killers might have thought that he would have had the money on him, but he had in fact earlier given it to his wife.
A man was charged with his murder but later acquitted by a magistrate.
