A Girl was found strangled and dumped in a pit.

The medical evidence showed that her death was brought about by strangulation with a piece of lace having been tied tightly around her neck and that she had then been dumped in the pond.

She was deformed in the ankles and blind in the eye from cataract.

The pond was 30 yards from some cottages on the opposite side of the road and was visible to all passers-by. She had been dead for some hours when she was found and was thought to have been thrown into the water during the night.

She was scantily clothed and destitute of either shoes, stockings or hat.

At her inquest, she was initially identified as being the daughter of a couple that had recently been admitted into a neighbouring workhouse. It was said that when the couple had left the union they had taken their child with them and so the police began to look for them.

However, when the couple were found in Norwich they had their child with them.

At the inquest, the witnesses that had identified the child had noted that the girl had suffered from rickets and their evidence seemed to be very clear, but the police said that they were fully satisfied that the couple in question still had their little girl in their care.
