Steven Bates was run over and stabbed to death in Tennyson Street, Battersea after he left the Queen’s Arms pub on 14 February 2008.
Three men were tried for his murder at the Old Bailey but acquitted.
He had been drinking at the flat of his long term partner in Battersea on 14 February 2008 and at 11pm after receiving a telephone call he said that he was going out to get some more wine. Less than an hour later he was found dead in Tennyson Street, Battersea near the Queen's Arms pub.
He appeared to have been pinned against a white Vauxhall Astra car by a Landrover Freelander car while he was standing and had been stabbed several times including three stab wounds to the back and a 20cm neck wound. His left leg was broken and he was found lying on the ground in a pool of blood.
A person that had lived on Tennyson Street said that they heard a loud bang and saw a large 4x4 Landrover Freelander vehicle crashing into the Vauxhall Astra car.
At the trial the court heard that Steven Bates had two partners and four children between them. One of his partners was his long-term partner with whom he had three children, however, his other lover with whom he had a child was the wife of a man that was in prison for armed robbery. The court heard that whilst his other lover's husband was in prison he had sent Steven Bates a voicemail saying 'I am going to sort you out. I am going to get you when I get out.'. Two of the men tried for his murder were the sons of the other women that Steven Bates was seeing.
The men admitted that they had been in the area at the time but one of them said that he had been busy delivering cannabis at the time and that he had resolved his differences with Steven Bates saying 'I was gutted. I did generally get on with Steven'.
One of the men tried had also previously been tried for the murder of Fabian Ricketts in 2006 but acquitted.
Another of the men that was tried for his murder and acquitted was later shot by two men on a motorbike on 20 July 2009. He was shot in the arm and leg as he walked along Wandsworth Road near Thessaly Road in Battersea at 11.50pm.
