Louis Brathwaite was shot inside a William Hill betting shop in Mauldeth Road West, Withington.
He was in the betting shop, which was crowded, with some friends on 28 January 2008 when a gunman came in at 8.40pm and fired five shots hitting Louis Brathwaite twice. Louis Brathwaite and another person were hit. The gunman had fired from the entrance of the shop and Louis Brathwaite was hit in the shoulder and abdomen.
Louis Brathwaite was taken to hospital where he was put on a life support machine but later died 12 days later on 10 February 2008. He died from a gunshot to the abdomen.
His friend that had been shot in his stomach recovered.
The gunman was described as black, between 5ft 7in and 6ft tall and dressed in dark clothing with his face covered. After the shooting it was said that the gunman ran out and got into a waiting black VW Golf car registration WG07 YXY. The car then drove off at speed along Yew Tree Road and then turned into Old Moat Lane.
Police said that they were interested in tracing a black man that was seen on CCTV at the Asda petrol station in Hulme, Manchester on 20 January filling up a blue Peugeot car that was fitted with false number plates. He had been wearing a distinctive jacket. A man that was also seen in CCTV footage that police wanted to trace later handed himself in and was ruled out of the investigation, although it’s not clear if that was the same man that had been seen at the petrol station.
Later on 10 May 2009 another man was shot in relation to the murder of Louis Brathwaite. It was said that the man that had killed Louis Brathwaite had been sat in a car in a pub car park in Stretford with Giuseppe Gregory, a 16-year-old youth when they were shot. Giuseppe Gregory was killed in the attack. However, the police said that the possibility that the man had been targeted in the belief that he was the man that had shot Louis Brathwaite had been ruled out by them in their enquiries into the murder of Louis Brathwaite.
In April 2010 a man was arrested on suspicion of Louis Brathwaite’s murder but later released.
Louis Brathwaite had lived in Congleton Avenue in Fallowfield.
