Dora May Grey

Dora May Grey was found dead on the beach.

She had lived with her aunts in a cottage at the end of Manby Road near the market.

She was found just before 5am on Monday 15 July 1912 lying on the beach about six yards from the road by two labourers who were driving to the beach in their horse and cart. She was lying on the beach on the open sands between the sea and the scenic railway. They thought that she was asleep at first but when they went up to her they saw her eyes tightly closed and her tongue protruding and realised that she was dead.

She was barefoot and her stockings had been removed and used to strangle her. The laces from her shoes had also been taken out and tied around her neck.

There was no sign of a struggle or footsteps in the sand and it was thought that she might have been killed elsewhere or had not put up a struggle.

She lay in the sand as though asleep in an easy comfortable attitude and looked absolutely peaceful.Her death was noted as having been 11 years after the murder of Mary Jane Bennett who was also found strangled on the beach for whome her husband was convicted of murder and sentenced to death.
