Dawn Shields was found strangled on the slopes of Mam Tor, a peak near Castleton in the Peak District.
She was found naked and buried beneath rocks and debris by National Trust wardens. It was thought that she had been there for about a week.
Mam Tor was 1,695 feet up in the Derbyshire Peak District.
She had severe head injuries and was identified by her fingerprints.
The police said that apart from the fact that her body was naked when it was found, there were no outward signs that her murder had been sexually motivated.
Dawn Shields had been a prostitute. The police set up a confidential phone line for her customers in the Sheffield red-light district to call them on.
She had disappeared about a week earlier and was last seen getting into a dark-coloured hatchback car in the red-light district of Broomhall in Sheffield, 20 miles away.
She had been wearing a see-through blouse, black velvet miniskirt and ankle boots when she was last seen, but the police were unable to find them. They said that they thought that she had been murdered elsewhere before being taken to Mam Tor and hidden.
